Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice U.S. Civil War Era blackened buff leather body sling, 2 3/8" wide with large brass buckle, intended to be draped over the shoulder. Attached is a Spring-loaded Carbine Sling Swivel Hook, used to secure Saddle Ring Carbine, like a SHARPS, under the arm for use when mounted on a Cavalry Charger. This sling allowed the trooper to easily access the carbine, and also served to stabilize it against the body for single-handed shooting. This left the opposite hand left free to guide the mount.
One thing that makes this one special is that it is the version that is made of the brown buff leather instead of the regular black bridle leather. These buff leather versions are much tougher to find than the black leather.
The leather part went over the cavalryman's shoulder and he could adjust the length with the brass buckle. The brass buckle and tip on this one are original with a nice look. They had the "batwing" tip to keep the leather end from fraying from use. The tip is present on this one and is in fine shape. The leather has a fine look from the years of age.
This type of sling was used with ALL types of Saddle Ring Carbines by both the Northern Federal troops and the Confederate Johnny Rebs. In nice condition, ready to display!
