Original U.S. Civil War Artillery Officer’s Private Purchase Chasseur Style Pattern Kepi - Possibly Militia or Zouave

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is one of the most attractive looking Civil War kepis you have seen in awhile. This red kepi was once worn by an Officer of either an Artillery Regiment or the famed Zouave Regiment due to them being identical. The cap does show age and wear, but this is one of the most solid examples we have seen in quite some time.

This is an absolutely stunning example of a Civil War Union Officer’s Kepi dating from the later portion of the American Civil War, Circa 1862-1863. This is the classic officer’s kepi which features a gold officer’s band around the circumference. The visor on this example is very loose and appears to have been resewn at this point. The visor is of painted lacquered leather, without a reinforcement edging.

The red wool of the cap is in fantastic condition with little mothing. The buttons and chinstrap are both missing. The leather sweatband is intact but is about 80% detached with most of its stitching absent. It could certainly be resewn. The lining is in fair shape with the pasteboard stiffening the crown being cracked. This is a great cap that requires a lot more research.

This is an absolutely beautiful cap from a scarce era. It is a solid piece, and is offered in “as found” untouched condition. Showing only the usual signs of age and honest wear, this cap was most certainly looked after and taken care of for the last 160 years!

A stunning example! Ready for display!
