Original U.S. Civil War .32cal Rimfire Tip-up Revolver by Lucius W. Pond in Original Flap Holster
Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a very nice private purchase .32cal Rimfire "Pocket" Revolver made by Lucius W. Pond in Worcester, Mass. He was one of many small producers located in the City, which was a hotbed of firearms development and production. The top and side of the octagonal barrel on this example is marked:
L.W. POND WORCESTER, MASS.
PAT'D JULY 10.1860
POND started production in 1861 with his .32 Caliber breech loading Six Shot Revolver. This features a barrel tip up system allowing access to the cylinder which had to be exposed to be loaded and re-loaded. It has walnut flat bottom grips, no trigger guard but a protected "spur" trigger being encased in a steel slot. The barrel is octagonal and measures 4 1/2" in length. The revolver is marked on the bottom of the grip, the main spring, cylinder axis pin, and under the barrel with serial number 873, and has assembly number 67 under the grips.
Condition is quite nice, though does show powder burn around the cylinder area, typical for black-powder cartridge revolvers. The bore shows lands and grooves, though also corrosion from powder, and the barrel hinge lock spring is broken, which would be easily be replaced. The Grips are quite nice, and look to be made of burl walnut, with just a bit of chipping around the edges.
In great working order the revolver comes with it's small Military style leather Flap Holster still in amazing condition for its age. The seams are somewhat split, but it presents very nicely for having been through a war and the 150 years after. Many Union Officers carried such privately purchased "Support Revolvers" during the Civil War. The Company closed in 1870.
Nice condition, rare and ready to display!
