This is a heavily worn and fragile Civil War era leather belt rig consisting of a leather waist belt fitted with a Model 1851 style Federal officer’s belt buckle, a black leather flap holster for a full-size percussion revolver, and a Federal percussion cap pouch. The grouping shows extensive age, field wear, old repairs, and later deterioration, and should be considered a display-only set.

The belt itself has a full break that was repaired long ago with twine. There are two V-cuts in the leather for reasons we are unsure of. The leather is heavily worn with heavy crazing and cracking. As mentioned the buckle end piece has broken off of the end of the belt itself.

The private purchase revolver holster has a heavy tear in the leather to the side, is missing the securing strap, but retains the knob. There look to be period repairs in the leather, and the belt loop is now very weak from being on the belt for so long. There is a large tear in the leather of the belt near where the holster is attached.

The cap pouch is in good condition but the securing strap is broken on one side, though it still sits on the knob for display. It could probably be fixed if someone wished to do so. The interior of the cap pouch retains none of the wool.

The weakened belt, broken buckle attachment, fragile holster loop, torn leather, and damaged cap pouch strap make it unsuitable for suspension or wear.

Please note that the buckle end piece is broken off of the belt and is only placed into its spot for display. It is completely detached from the belt.

Despite its condition, the rig preserves a useful combination of Civil War era sidearm equipment. The officer-pattern buckle, full-size percussion revolver holster, and cap pouch present well together and illustrate the types of leather accoutrements associated with Federal service during the Civil War period.
