Original Items. Only One Available. This is a fantastic collection of 25 WWI Era toys depicting American soldiers in various positions and situations, with a few British soldiers mixed in as well. There’s also a single Civil War soldier that was mixed in. Most of the toys are of the well-known Barclay Manoil maker but there may be a few outliers. The figures are all about 3 inches tall but they vary depending on the position and context. The set also comes with a toy “mess hall”. Many of the toys have heavy paint loss, so please take a close look at each example.
The Lot includes:
- WWI Officer appearing to hold a swagger stick.
- WWI soldier marching with rifle.
- WWI soldier using telegraph phone.
- WWI soldier using bugle.
- WWI British officer standing at attention.
- WWI or interwar soldier playing drum.
- WWI soldier using telephone? Piece is missing so he looks to be relaxing.
- WWII Soldier peeling potatoes.
- WWI soldier wearing camouflage suit with rifle laying on ground.
- Civil War era civilian in black suit.
- Civil War union soldier with rifle and forage cap.
- British officer walking.
- A US soldier playing French horn, helmet is missing and there is hole in head.
- WWI soldier with dog likely looking for survivors in wreckage.
- WWI Soldier on horseback wearing a campaign hat.
- U.S. Cowboy on white horse in white suit and cowboy hat.
- WWII Era soldier carrying the American flag.
- WWI soldier in blue uniform manning a heavy machine gun.
- Two soldiers using a machine to detect incoming planes and airships based on sound.
- Five Victorian British soldiers, likely Highlanders based on their kilts, holding and aiming rifles in different positions, on one knee and laying down.
- A small cloth mess hall on a plywood base with two small rods to hold it up. On the ends of the rods are American flags, but one of the flags is gone. The front reads MESS HALL. Cute addition.
These toys are in overall fair shape but there are some in heavy disrepair. These will make a tremendous complement to any military collection. Ready for further research and display.
The Barclay Manufacturing Company was an American metal toy company based in New Jersey that specialised in diecast toy cars and hollowcast toy soldiers. Due to their common availability at five and dime stores, collectors often refer to Barclay's toy soldiers as "Dimestore soldiers". Barclay Manufacturing was formed by Leon Donze and Michael Levy in about 1922. The name of the company came from Barclay Street in Hoboken, New Jersey. During the 1930s, the company was later based in North Bergen, New Jersey.
