Item Description
Original item: Only One Available. Imported from England, this Percussion Pistol has a huge .75 " bore, the same size as a BROWN BESS MUSKET! This certainly delivered a punch, a real man stopper, if needed. However the appeal was not really for shooting men: it was to combat the massive BEARS encountered all over the Northern States of America. The Fur trade was menaced by bears that were dangerous to the trappers of that time. These small Cannons were the only reasonable answer in the day. A single shot "trade Pistol" widely used by trappers and the Hudson Bay Company.
The pistol features a percussion back action lock, however the maker's name is not present, only the importer/retailer's name, which can be found on the top flat of the octagonal barrel:
Wm DAVIS. ALBANY. NEW YORK
Overall length is 14 inches with an 8 1/2 inch long .75" bore octagonal barrel, with London proof house marks on the left barrel facet. Comes complete with an original wood ramrod, dating to approximately 1835-1850.
