Original Item: Only One Available. This is a great example of a WWII Era Australian-made "Commando" Fighting Knife by East Brothers of Sydney, Australia. The company had designed these knives specifically for use by Australian Commandos and American Forces, most likely the Marines. The knife is an example marked with ricasso and is not "sanitized" as is often found in some knives.
This is a rare WW2 era fighting knife that was manufactured by East Bros in Sydney, Australia for the US and Australian military. It is known as an Australian Commando Knife and is quite difficult to find these days. The knife was designed by Australian Whittingslowe Engineering during the war and was produced by several manufacturers including East Bros until 1945. This exact type of knife is illustrated on pages 55-56 of the book "Knives of the United States Military World War II" by Michael W Silvey. Michael is a well-established expert and author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons.
This Australian Commando knife is service worn but still in great overall condition, with no edge nicks or hammer marks on the spine. The saber-point high carbon steel blade has been re-sharpened, but not harshly, and the tip is intact. The East Bros manufacturing stamp EAST BROS / SYDNEY is sharply struck at the ricasso. The original wood handle grips feature 3 iron pins and an extra-wide iron guard, and all parts do have the expected movement from material shrinkage. This fighting knife measures approximately 11-1/4″ / 28.5 cm overall, with a blade length of about 6-1/8″ / 15.5 cm.
The original leather scabbard comes with a standard-issue metal wire belt hanger made by Goldseal in Sydney, Australia. The Australian military “broad arrow” acceptance stamp, manufacturing stamp J.W. TRATHEN & CO / SYDNEY / 1943. All original rivers and stitching are intact as well as the retaining strap. These Aussie scabbards are actually more scarce than the knives as most did not fare well in the jungle environment, so very few survived the war. This scarce WW2 East Bros Australian Commando Knife and its original scabbard have not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, and the set is in 100% original “as is” condition.
Comes more than ready for further research and display.
