Original U.S. Army Air Forces Private Purchase / Custom Tailored Elastique Ike Jacket

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very beautiful, professionally tailored Ike Jacket made from elastique. Experience in North Africa and Sicily confirmed that the wool serge Service Coat was worthless in combat. In the fall of 1943 a short wool jacket was adopted for the Air Corps, similar to the British battle dress jacket, and was investigated for the other services. By the end of 1944, the Jacket, Field, Wool (Ike Jacket) was standard for all soldiers in the ETO.

The standard model of the "Jacket, Field, Wool, Officers" is identical to the enlisted man's version (or woman's version) except for the lining which is rayon. Senior officers often had custom tailored uniforms including custom made jackets in the same style of the Ike Jacket, such as this elastique one here.

The jacket appears to be American made with American hardware and the standard U.S. Army buttons on the pockets and shoulder flaps. There are no tags or any manufacturer information present on the jacket. The only insignia featured on the jacket is a wool Army Air Forces patch on the left shoulder. There is evidence of other insignia being on the jacket, there are pin holes present above the left breast pocket and on the shoulder boards.

There is the expected wear and mothing present on the jacket and slight tearing on the right sleeve. There is a what appears to be a name cut into the lining on the back and looks like “M.F. CONWAY”. We have not attempted to research the name due to how common of a name it was and still is. So with a little dedication we are certain that you would be able to come up with something!

This is a very beautiful, unique and more than likely one-of-a-kind Ike jacket! It would be perfect for your WW2 USAAF collections!
