Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a spectacular Revolutionary War Era wooden tankard which was handmade with staves and bound to hole them together. The tankard has been carved with a zig-zag pattern and circles across the tankard and the lid, along with the initials of the person who carved it, I.D.S.. The tankard has a base diameter of 6⅜” with a lid diameter of 5¼”. It measures 7½” tall at the top of the hinge. This tankard is “Staved”, meaning it’s constructed from vertical wooden plank bound together like this example. The handle is integrated into one of the staves, with the lid hinge integrated into the top of the handle as shown. The lid is a bit loose but the hinge still functions as intended.
This tankard came out of North-Eastern New York State, so there may be a case for attempting to identify this with enough tireless effort. But as it sits, it is a fantastic piece of American Revolutionary antiquity, with a great deal of character. For its age, this tankard is in miraculous condition, and will look tremendous in any period collection. We wouldn’t recommend using it to hold mead nowadays.
This is one of the most beautiful tankards we have ever offered, and the first one of this period. Comes ready for further research and display!
