Original Item: Only One Available. This is a stunning example of an early American-Made Militia rifleman’s bag with a period correct pair of powder horns and a shot pouch. The leather of the bag has held up tremendously well, and the bag has a great applied pattern which gives it phenomenal character. One of the two powder horns also retains several fragments of its leather carrying strap, and retains its meticulously-carved stopper.
The rifleman’s bag is of the correct period construction with the long pointed front flap which is only weak at the bend. The leather of the bag appears very sticky, which is correct for leather of this age, and due to the moisture, the leather is still a bit pliable. The leather straps are in good shape and the strap has an interesting deviation with a longer strap and buckle that protrudes further outward. This was likely for the attachment of another piece of equipment. Under the flap is a fantastic stitched-on tinder pocket, with some tinder still left inside! The body of the bag has a gorgeous checkered pattern with small rosette stamps in each square. Truly evident of the bag’s age and character.
The powder horn is a gorgeous well-used example with heavy wear, with the retaining screw still installed on the wooden bottom with some of the leather strap still retained around it. This example retains the leather loop under the throat which has been there a very long time. The best feature of this horn is of course the beautiful hand-carved wooden stopper with a lovely pattern, and the retention leather string is still attached. Great carving work, this is a true one-looker. The horn measures roughly 10¼” long.
The smaller powder horn is in good shape and would have been meant for a pistol. It has a great patina with good carving but no stopper. The horn is 5½” long.
The shot pouch is a lovely example with a carved wooden spout and wooden stopper. This is a gorgeous and complete example. Roughly 8” long.
This is a lovely set that requires some love and care. A great Revolutionary War era rifleman’s set, ready for further research and display.
