Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a fantastic American-made Officer’s cuttoe hunting sword from the Revolutionary War era. The sword features a gorgeous fluted ivory handle and a filigree guard which is broken as shown. However, the broken piece is still included, and could absolutely be re-attached if someone took the time. The name “cuttoe” is an anglicization of the French term couteaux de chasse, meaning “hunting knife.”
This lovely example bears a 26 ⅛” mostly straight blade with past oxidation having been cleaned away. The blade is in very good condition for its age. The crossguard has lovely filigree and the thin material is why the piece broke off. The piece is still intact and will be included with the sword for repair. The crossguard when correctly put together is “wavy” with one side pointing up and the other pointing down. The intact side originally would have had a chain that connected to the loop on the side of the urn pommel.
The urn pommel has lovely faceting and really ties the piece together. The ivory grip is beautifully cut with a single strip of brass being wrapped in the recesses. The overall length is 32¼”.
The brass-mounted leather scabbard is excellent with great period embossing patterns on the body. These small details would have been lost to time centuries ago if it weren’t kept in outstanding condition. There is some wear and tearing under the frog button as shown. The brass drag is very heavy, and the two top mounts retain their dented suspension rings.
All in all this is a phenomenal American-made officer’s hunting sword, with the only major defect being the half of the crossguard broken off, but this could be repaired with some work. Ready for further research and display!
