Original U.S. American Revolutionary War Era Monsterhead Mounted Saber with Gorgeously Engraved Blade - Circa 1770

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. Brass hilted monster head hangers were in use with the British army from at least the mid-to-late 17th century. Sometimes they are fairly crude cast-brass and some with a little more discernible detail. By the mid-18th century, they seem to be quite similar in form.
This is an extravagant example of an early American monsterhead mounted saber with a fullered blade which is clearly engraved on both sides with the moon, the sun, and a heavenly arm protruding from the clouds clutching a saber, the first symbol ever used on an American flag (Bedford Flag), carried by Minutemen at the dawn of the Revolution. The grip of this example is the original wood with a now very-loose wire wrap which appears to be the original wrap now very warped and uneven. There is visible cracking in the wood below.
The gorgeous 31½” blade is in fantastic condition for its age, with some heavy staining and wear, with heavy chipping in the edge of the blade from use or age. Both sides of the blade sport a fuller which lasts roughly 21 1/2”. The engravings on both sides are completely evident of the period, and their condition is nothing short of phenomenal.
The hilt is of brass and has held up tremendously, without any significant damage or denting. The heart-shaped crossguard is similar to the well-known British 1742 pattern hanger swords, but this example looks much more hand-detailed and is truly a work of art. The Monsterhead pommel is very nicely hand-detailed and is correct to the period.
