Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. Brass hilted monster head hangers were in use with the British army from at least the mid-to-late 17th century. Sometimes they are fairly crude cast-brass and some with a little more discernible detail. By the mid-18th century, they seem to be quite similar in form.
This is an extravagant example of an early American monsterhead mounted saber with a triple-fullered blade which is clearly engraved on both sides with the moon, the sun, and a heavenly arm protruding from the clouds clutching a saber. The grip of this example appears to have been professionally replaced some time ago, in the period correct configuration with a brass wire wrapping around the wood three times. Despite being replaced, the grip absolutely looks the part and displays beautifully.
The gorgeous 31¼” blade is in fantastic condition for its age, with some light staining and wear, and just a few small chips in the edge of the blade that are not even too noticeable. Both sides of the blade sport a triple-fuller which lasts roughly 20”. The engravings on both sides are completely evident of the period, and their condition is nothing short of phenomenal.
The hilt is of brass and has held up tremendously, without any significant damage or denting. The Monsterhead pommel is very nicely-detailed and is correct to the period. The replaced grip matches the sword perfectly and really ties the entire piece together.
One of the most beautiful and well-preserved early American swords we have ever offered, ready for further research and display.
