Original U.S. American Revolutionary War 1783 Dated Wood Cheese Box Canteen

Item Description

Original item: Only One Available. This canteen was sold for $2185 as part of the Clegg sale on November 23-24, 2007 by Wiederseim Associates, Inc. in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania.  The canteen includes a newspaper article on this sale in the February, 2008 edition of Maine Antiques Digest shows a photograph of the canteen and discusses the sale of it.

the canteen measures 7-3/8" in diameter and is constructed of wood in the cheese box manner. Held together by two iron bands and three iron loops for sling. Round wooden ring with tapered wooden plaug, attached to canteen by iron chain. Complete with period leather sling which appears to have been repaired in a few areas. Faces of canteen are convex, front AK or JAK and the large date 1783 along with an arrow at the N, S, E, and W locations. Retains a dark patina overall. A very nice rare canteen dating from the American Revolution.
