Original Items: Only One Set Available. This is a colorful collection of eight vintage Japanese-made military toy pieces and packaged sets from approximately the 1950s–1960s, formerly part of the American Armoured Foundation, Inc. Tank and Ordnance Memorial Museum collection. The group includes lithographed tin and mechanical tanks by several Japanese manufacturers, including Alps and Toy Hero, together with two unopened or sealed retail packages containing additional miniature military vehicles.
This set includes the following pieces:
- Large K Japanese company Camouflage Army tank with Signalman in turret waving flags. Great piece, not fully functional. Man actually waves flags when moving. 7 x 5 x 5”.
- Two X-81 Super X tanks by Japanese company Hert. Both still have keys and somewhat work.
- General Patton toy tank by Alps of Japan. Not working.
- M47 Patton toy tank by Alps of Japan. Not working.
- Army M-51 toy tank, marked MADE IN JAPAN.
- Pack of four tiny toy tanks in plastic with label at top. Great piece.
- Pack of Army Flatbed truck with M47 tank on the back in pack by International Toy House of Petersburg, Virginia, with 49 cents on label. There is tearing in the plastic from the tank gun. Great piece!
The tanks came to us from the American Armoured Foundation, Inc. Tank and Ordnance Memorial Museum. The AAF Tank Museum was a living memorial dedicated to the Tank and Cavalry soldiers of the world. Before 1981 some of the artifacts that make up the AAF Tank Museum was a private collection belonging to Mr. William Gasser. Mr. Gasser felt that his collection would be beneficial in educating present and future generations to the sacrifices made and the technologies gained during war. Therefore, in 1981 the AAF Tank Museum was established as a non-profit charitable organization, and Mr. Gasser's donated his private collection to the Tank Museum. Mr. Gasser is still active as Volunteer Director and Curator of the Tank Museum and his knowledge of military history has been a great asset to the museum. Unfortunately after 20 years of operation it had to close its doors, which is when these tanks were acquired.
This collection is particularly noteworthy for its combination of Japanese lithographed tin construction, Toy Hero X-81 Super-X rollover tanks, Alps Patton-series tanks, surviving keys and mechanical components, two original retail packages, and provenance from the A.A.F. Tank Museum collection. Together, the eight pieces provide an excellent cross-section of the military-themed Japanese toy industry that flourished during the early postwar decades.
