Original U.S. 1929 USMC China Horse Marine Equestrian Trophies and Photo Grouping

Item Description

Original Items: One-of-a-kind grouping. Corporal Guy R. Boor enlisted in the United States Marine corps at Des Moines, Iowa on 7 April 1926. After completing recruit training at Parris Island, SC, He reported for duty in Haiti on 22 June 1926.

Transferred to the 2nd Co, 6th marines he departed for duty with the marine brigade in Nicaragua on 12 may 1927. Embarking for duty in China in 1928 he was assigned to Headquarters Company, legation guard, Peking, China.

This was the specialized unit known to the world as the famous "Horse Marines" associated with the glory years of China duty. While a member of the Mounted Detachment, Boor was an active participant in equestrian competitions. Mounted on the smaller Mongolian ponies, members of the detachment competed against mounted units from many other countries that were also assigned duty in the international settlement.

Included in this grouping are photographs and two of the silver cups corporal Boor won in competition in China from 1929 to 1930. Also included are various photographs of corporal boor in locations where he served. This is a small piece of true history of the corps during the banana wars and service on the china station.

The term China Marines, originally referred to the United States Marines, of the 4th Marine Regiment, who were stationed in Shanghai, China from 1927 to 1941 to protect American citizens and property in the Shanghai International Settlement, during the Chinese Revolution and the Second Sino-Japanese War. Those Marines stationed at the embassy in Peking and the consulate in Tientsin referred to themselves as North China Marines.
