Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very interesting Double barrel percussion shotgun, in what looks to be 14 bore, a very popular size for fowling guns at that time. It is fitted with 28" double barrels, and measures 43 ½" in overall length. The gun is completely devoid of any type of maker or proof marks, even under the fore stock. It also is definitely not constructed in the typical European style of the time, leading us to conclude that it is most likely a U.S. made shotgun, as British and European shotguns would almost always have proof marks on the bottom of the barrel.
Unlike most percussion shotguns we see there is no barrel wedge to hold on the fore stock, which is instead held on with a large flathead bolt under a brass cover. The action is much more like a hammer shotgun, with a single piece receiver, and has some very interesting locks. These are in fact back action, but have the main springs extending back INSIDE of the butt stock. The barrel is attached to the receiver by a flathead screw on top, definitely another difference from a "standard" type of shotgun from the mid 1800s.
Overall condition of the shotgun is very good, with a lovely aged patina on the metalwork, and the wood showing a lovely glow from decades of occasional cleaning. The locks are both functional, however neither holds at half cock. The cap nipple cones both look to be original, and show wear from use and powder burn. There is a brass tipped ramrod under the barrel, which can be a bit hard to remove.
A very interesting shotgun, of a design that we have not seen before! This would look perfect mounted on a wall. Ready to research and display!
