Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an outstanding and scarce example of the Cold War period prototype Inox survival knife, manufactured by Klotzli likely under Inox supervision around 1980. From the information we were provided, the president of the company did not want to manufacture and sell these knives. They were made on a special order basis only to the Swiss Military for a period of 1-2 years. The blade bears the Klotzli logo in between INOX and SWISSMADE, and the underside of the crossguard bears the Klotzli logo over 030, likely a serial number.

This example came to us from the Larry Thomas American Edged Weapon Museum in Intercourse, Pennsylvania, further cementing its authenticity and prestige.

The 8 ¼” Bowie style blade has a roughly 4 ¼” sawback along the spine. The knife is still very sharp and only shows the original factory sharpening marks. The brass crossguard has holes at each end for the attachment of a lanyard, with one attached on the side. The handle is wrapped with green cord, and doesn’t look to have ever been undone. The pommel is unscrewable, and has a compass on the interior side! Inside the handle is a small cylindrical tube with fishing tools, a great survival tool to have in your knife! The overall length is 13 ½”.

The original leather sheath is the standard type for this knife, with two holes in a leather piece at the drag for the attachment of a rope or lanyard, and there is still a rope attached. There is another rope attached at the belt loop, which has six holes for this purpose. There is a large plow for a whetstone, with one inside still wrapped in the original paper, only fitting half of the pouch however. This was likely meant to hole two whetstones of equal size. The sheath retains the diagonal securing strap with a functional snap. The sheath is roughly 14 ⅛” and is unmarked, but the snaps are marked PRYM.

With its INOX / Klötzli / SWISSMADE blade marking, No. 030 guard stamp, large sawback Bowie blade, hollow cord-wrapped survival handle, integral compass, internal fishing kit, original leather scabbard with PRYM hardware, surviving whetstone, and provenance from the Larry Thomas American Edged Weapon Museum collection, this is an unusually complete and compelling Swiss Cold War survival knife.
