  • Original Item: Only One Available. We've all seen the Indo-Persian KULAH KHUD spiked helmets of the 18th and 19th centuries. This design goes back to the times of the Crusaders and Saladin during the battles over the Holy Land in the 12th century. See the Movie KINGDOM OF HEAVEN made by RIDLEY SCOTT for some great examples, as well as a great movie.

This example likely comes from the Sudan, and is all brass construction with a lovely Arabic-engraved nasal plate. This example is not decorated on the body, and is missing the spike.

The front of the helmet has a nasal plate which has four lines of engraved Arabic text tat we could not translate. It appears that the nasal plate broke off at one point and was reattached with nails. These normally have two feather plume holders flanking the nose guard, however this one has none, and does not look to have ever had them. There is a small floral base for a spike which is absent.

The chainmail neck defense is entirely gone, with only four rings of the chainmail retained on the holes. The helmet is not lined, and we believe was intended to be worn over the typical head dress of the time. This example may have been recovered from the battlefield after the Battle of Omdurman in 1898.

In very worn patina’d condition, this is a lovely example, ready to display.
