Original Spanish U.S. Revolutionary War Era "Do Not Draw Me Without Reason, Do Not Sheath Me Without Honor” Officer’s Sword with Diamond Rounded Knuckle Bow - Extremely Similar Blade Used on Continental General Daniel Morgan’s Sword

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an outstanding Revolutionary War era officer’s sword with a diamond rounded knuckle bow and an interesting alternating wood and brass bar grip. The sword bears a Spanish inscription on both sides of the blade which depicts the phrase "Do Not Draw Me Without Reason, Do Not Sheath Me Without Honor”. This exact same design of blade down to the lettering format can be seen on the sword of Continental Army General Daniel Morgan which is currently on display in the National Museum of the United States Army. The 31 ⅜” blade is engraved with:
[NO ME] SAQUES SIN RASON
on one side, and on the other side with:
[NO ME] ENBAINES SIN HONOR
The “NO ME” on both sides is heavily worn away from oxidation, but we are certain this is what is engraved. The phrase is meant to be read as “Draw me not without reason, sheath me not without honor”, a common phrase found on swords from the 16th-19th centuries. We have found two examples online of American Revolutionary War officer swords with this exact blade design with the same small letter style quirks.
The diamond rounded knuckle bow is a very interesting and unique design choice, with fluting along the handguard. The grip is alternating strips of wood and brass coming from the pommel, and there looks to have been something covering the wood at one point, likely leather. The spacer under the crossguard is beautifully engraved with flowers on one side and fluting on the other. The overall length of the sword is 36 ½”. The blade has one wide fuller along the length on both sides with a much thinner fuller starting around 8” from the crossguard. There is moderate oxidation on both sides.
This is an excellent officer’s sword extremely similar to known examples used by officers of the American Revolutionary War. It will fit well as a representative piece in any collection, but could also use further research into the hilt design and overall use.
This sword is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its Revolutionary War-era form, Spanish motto blade, diamond-section knuckle bow, alternating wood-and-brass grip, and direct comparison with documented American Revolutionary War swords using similarly inscribed Spanish blades. The blade type and construction place it firmly within the material culture of the American Revolutionary War.
