This is a very attractive Spanish-made veteran replacement example of the German Erinnerungsmedaille für die spanischen Freiwilligen im Kampf gegen den Bolschewismus, commonly known to collectors as the Blue Division Medal or Spanish Volunteers in Russia Medal. The decoration itself was instituted by Germany on January 3, 1944, for Spanish volunteers who had served on the Eastern Front with the División Azul, or Blue Division, which entered German service as the 250th Infantry Division.

Importantly, the construction and mounting of this particular example are consistent with the Spanish-made replacement medals produced for Blue Division veterans after WWII, rather than the standard German wartime zinc issue. Spanish veterans were permitted to continue wearing their German decorations after the war, and replacement versions were subsequently manufactured in Spain. Comparable examples constructed in bronze and suspended from a short ribbon fitted with a rectangular clasp and horizontal pinback have been dated to approximately the mid-1960s.

The medal is circular with a warm bronze-toned finish and retains strong definition throughout its raised design. The obverse incorporates several deliberately combined German and Spanish motifs. At the top is a left-facing German steel helmet. Beneath this are two shields laid over a horizontal sword: the left shield bears the German military eagle, while the right displays the Falangist yoke-and-arrows emblem. Below the shields is a swas. surrounded by foliage. This combination was intended to represent the Spanish volunteers' service alongside the German armed forces on the Eastern Front.

The reverse bears the prominent Spanish inscription:

translating directly as "Spanish Division of Volunteers in Russia."

Below the inscription is an Iron Cross motif surrounded by sprays of foliage, traditionally identified as laurel and oak leaves. The lettering remains particularly clear in this example and gives the reverse excellent visual character.

The medal hangs from a short Spanish-style ribbon in black, red, and yellow, terminating at the top in a rectangular bronze-colored mounting bar. The reverse of the bar retains its long horizontal pin attachment. Period stitching remains visible where the ribbon has been secured behind the mount. This style of brooch-mounted suspension is an important clue to the medal's Spanish veteran-replacement manufacture and distinguishes it from the more familiar German wartime issue, which was normally encountered on a German-style ribbon without this type of pinback mounting.

The conditions are very good. The principal devices and inscription remain well defined. The ribbon retains strong red and yellow coloration, with expected age-related creasing, minor fading, loose threads, and some fraying along the lower edges. The mounting bar and pin show normal surface age and oxidation but remain complete as shown.
