Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an exquisite example of a Spanish Pattern 1953 sword, which is relatively hard to find. It features the highly sought-after "lion head" pommel, gilt hilt and a pierced crowned eagle displaying a red cross on its breast on the guard. The broad fullered blade measures 30 ½” and bears the inscription TOLEDO SPAIN on the ricasso. The sword comes with a plated scabbard with a single suspension ring. It appears to be in an unused condition with only minor signs of storage on the scabbard.
Toledo steel, historically known for being unusually hard, is from Toledo, Spain, which has been a traditional sword-making, metal-working center since about the Roman period, and came to the attention of Rome when used by Hannibal in the Punic Wars. It soon became a standard source of weaponry for Roman legions. Toledo steel was famed for its high quality alloy.
This is a wonderful example and comes more than ready for further research and display.
