Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very attractive original Spanish national flag from the Francoist period, displaying the postwar coat of arms used from 1945 until 1977. The flag measures approximately 38 ½ x 58 inches and retains its white hoist header with rope attachments at both ends. The header itself is unmarked.
The design consists of the traditional Spanish red-yellow-red horizontal tricolor with the large Franco-era national coat of arms centered on the yellow field and extending into portions of the red fields. The arms incorporate the Eagle of Saint John, the shield of Spain, the Pillars of Hercules, and the other heraldic devices associated with the Francoist state.
The red and yellow bicolor flag was restored by the Nationalist government during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, replacing the Republican tricolor. In 1938, a new version incorporating the Eagle of Saint John and a redesigned national coat of arms was introduced. The pattern was revised again in 1945, establishing the enlarged postwar coat of arms seen on this example.
The 1945 pattern remained the standard national flag of Francoist Spain through the remainder of Francisco Franco’s rule and into the early transition period following his death in 1975. It was eventually replaced by a revised national design in 1977.
The combination of its large size, complete rope attachments, intact stitched construction, and clearly recognizable 1945–1977 Francoist coat of arms makes this a strong representative example of postwar Spanish state symbolism and an impressive display piece for a collection focused on Spanish military or political history.
