  • Original Item: Only One Available. By the mid-Victorian period of the 1870s, Spain did not have much of an Empire left to speak of. Their South American Colonies were all independent and only some S.E. Asian holdings, mainly the Philippines, and Cuba in the Caribbean remained.

This is a very strong and manly Short Sword / hatchet, almost a large Bolo knife. Brass hilted with a flaming grenade motif to pommel indicating use by Artillery and Sappers. It has a straight integral brass cross guard. The blade measures just 16" in length but it's width is 2 1/4" at it's widest. It resembles a very large Bowie Knife and just ideal for hacking through any tropical jungle. The blade is stamped in large letters:

    ARTA FABA
    DE
    TOLEDO
    1876

There is small evidence of pitting toward the front of the blade however the item is still very impressive, and was made in the legendary Sword-Making city of Toledo, which has a history going back to 500 BCE, and supplied blades to the Roman Legions. Very possibly a War Trophy taken home from Cuba after the Spanish American War of 1898. Ready to Display
