Original Item. Only One Available. This is a fantastic artifact of the Spanish American War, certainly brought back by an American soldier. These helmet plates were coveted by Americans as war souvenirs and were often taken by American officers.
The plate measures 2 ⅞ x 4 ¼” and the red and gold painted “cockade” at the top retains much of its paint though there is some loss at the raised portions. The original attachment prong is retained on the reverse, and on it is engraved:
Jr. Juancisco
Pever(?)
This is certainly the Spanish officer’s inscription, and could warrant some further research.
Captured items from the Spanish-American War are difficult to come by due to the short-lived nature of the war and lower numbers of troops as compared with WWI and WWII. This is a great souvenir taken from a Spanish officer which shows the patina and wear of a true wartime captured piece.
An outstanding example that will look great in any Spanish-American War collection. Ready for display!
