Original Spanish-American War Late 19th Century Spanish Officer’s Chapeau-Bras Collapsible Bicorn Cap by Madrid Based Manufacturer
Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a fantastic piece of history that dates back to the Spanish-American War era. A Chapeau-Bras, which translates literally to “hat arm”, is a bicorne hat that is designed to be compressed and carried under the arm, formerly worn on dress occasions by men in the 18th Century, and later.
These caps were intended as a Dress Hat, and not too many survived the ages due to their fragile nature as you can see from the photos.
The hat features a red cockade with gilt wire bullion embroidered. These Caps were mostly universal, with the only distinction being the branch of service button affixed to the cockade. The overall condition is still quite nice but due to over 120 years of storage the material has started to deteriorate. The interior is lined with a lovely cream colored polished cotton and a still solid leather sweatband.
A lovely, worn example ready for further research and display.
