Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is just lovely, an original 18th century large Spanish Miquelet lock holster pistol, with decorated brass mounts. The pistol has an overall length of 16 inches, with a 10 inch barrel, and comes complete with its brass mounted ram rod. The half octagonal and half round iron barrel is inlaid with silver scrolls, stars and crossed as well as a large GOLD maker's mark Cartouche, but reading it is very difficult.
A clearer Maker's cartouche appears on the lock and seems to show the Maker's initials were R.C. / C.A. The heavy brass mounts, including grotesque mask long eared Butt Cap, side plate, trigger guard and ram rod pipes are all deeply chiseled and engraved with silver female heads appearing on both side plate and escutcheon. The highly engraved lock has a large ring on Miquelet's Hammer screw.
A stirring pistol of the 1700's very traditionally Spanish, but also what Pirates favored. Fabulous condition and ready to display, all we need is Errol Flynn!
History of the Miquelet Lock:
Miquelet lock is a modern term used by collectors and curators, largely in the English-speaking world, for a type of firing mechanism used in muskets
and pistols. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Balkans, North Africa, Ottoman Empire and throughout Spain's colonies from the late 16th to the mid 19th centuries.
The term miquelet lock was not recorded until the 19th century, long after the appearance of the mechanism in the 16th century, and is of uncertain origin. One commonly held view is that it was coined by British troops in the Peninsular War to describe the style of musket used by the Miquelet (militia) that had been assigned to the Peninsular Army of the Duke of Wellington.
