Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original Soviet Model 1940 Naval Commander’s Dagger, an early wartime pattern distinguished by its no-button scabbard retention system, yellow plastic grip, gilt-finished metal fittings, Soviet state symbolism, and black leather-covered scabbard with naval decoration. The blade ricasso is marked with a serial number on the ricasso: NO 02098, but there is no date or maker mark on the reverse side. This appears correct for a wartime dagger, but without a date we can only call it WWI era. The grip of some sort of yellow ochre type bone. The pommel has a Soviet Star on the tip, and the USSR Emblem on the side. The brass mounted leather scabbard is engraved on the throat with a fouled anchor on one side, and a Man-o-War on the reverse.
The dagger is 12 1/2 inches long with a 8 1/2 inch double edged spear-point blade, a classic dagger design. The blade was sharpened during the period and has scattered wear with minor oxidation spotting coming through. The original thin leather blade buffer is retained, very rare to see.
The combination of the serial-numbered but otherwise unmarked blade, early no-button scabbard system, yellow plastic grip, Soviet star pommel, USSR state emblem, warship and fouled-anchor decoration, and surviving leather blade washer makes this a strong example of the Soviet Model 1940 naval commander’s dagger and an especially representative piece of wartime Soviet naval dress equipment.
