  • Original Item: Only One Available. This exquisite dagger is a true masterpiece of craftsmanship, made during the height of the Cold War and believed to be one of the last daggers produced before the regulations changed in 1958. The etched blade of this dagger is something to behold, with an impressive length of 8 3/4" and a diamond-section that gives it a unique and striking appearance. The blade is in near-mint condition, with the KGB emblem on one side, along with a serial number Г08954. There is no date or maker insignia visible due to the etching done on the blade.

The hilt of this dagger is equally impressive, featuring a brass recurved guard with scroll quillon, a faceted pommel that is adorned with the Soviet state seal displaying the 15 scrolls representing the 15 republics in the USSR, and an orange Bakelite grip with base ferrule and lock release button. The combination of these elements makes for a truly stunning and awe-inspiring design that draws the eye in and leaves a lasting impression. Upon closer inspection, it appears that the etching on the blade was executed in a substandard manner, more than likely added to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the blade while displayed.

There is a lovely “presentation plate” embedded into the bakelite handle, which we were able to translate:

    Почетному
    сотруднику К. Г. Б.
    майору Бабичу С. Г.
    от Управлених К. Г. Б.

    Loosely translating to:

"To the honorary employee of K. G. B. Major S. G. Babich from the Directorate of K. G. B." Please note that the inscription is in Cyrillic "script" format, which looks quite a bit different than the typeface version.

The Committee for State Security (CSS) (“KGB”) was the main security agency for the Soviet Union from 13 March 1954 until 3 December 1991. As a direct successor of preceding agencies such as the Cheka, GPU, OGPU, NKGB, NKVD and MGB, it was attached to the Council of Ministers. It was the chief government agency of "union-republican jurisdiction", carrying out internal security, foreign intelligence, counter-intelligence and secret police functions. Similar agencies operated in each of the republics of the Soviet Union aside from the Russian SFSR, where the KGB was headquartered, with many associated ministries, state committees and state commissions.

The black leather scabbard that comes with this dagger is just as impressive, with brass mounts and twin carry rings that make it easy to transport and keep safe. The throat of the scabbard is decorated with a depiction of the Kremlin Spasskaya Tower on one side and the Soviet star with hammer and sickle on the other, further adding to the overall aesthetic appeal of this incredible piece.

The brass parts of the dagger, including the oval buckle with the Soviet star and hammer and sickle surrounded by laurel leaves, retain little of their original bright gold varnish with only the slightest wear in the metal. The leather scabbard is smooth and retains a nice luster, while the blade has a mirror finish with only the slightest runner wear.

Overall, this dagger ensemble is an outstanding example of superior craftsmanship, difficult to find in better condition and totally complete. It is a true work of art that is sure to impress and amaze, and is perfect for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Comes more than ready for further research and display.
