  • Original Item: Only One Available. This fine example is totally non-functional and inert having been de-milled according to specifications outlined by the BATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives). The Soviet Russian 82-BM-37 / M-37 inert display mortar is inoperable and fully legal to own throughout the USA without any type of license. It has a bore width hole in the tube, steel cross pins welded across the bore. It comes complete with an original bipod, base plate, and original mortar sight in the case. It retains a fair amount of the original paint with very heavy wear.

This example has serial number 5957 on the bottom of the tube, with additional number 1389 on the barrel right where it connects to the bottom. The baseplate is stamped Nr. 1908, a serial number, and r.37, likely for a date of 1937. (г. is short for год, the Russian word for "Year"). It is also stamped 684R along with several other faint stamped markings. This set saw very heavy repeated use over the years.

The traverse yoke still retains distance conversions and is in good shape overall. Several pieces are stamped 27, likely a serial or part number. The bipod is stamped 166, a serial number, and 1942, the year of manufacture.

The original mortar sight comes in its original case, and still attached to the mortar bipod without issue. It displays very well and retains a data plate reading:

    MП-82
    N6866       (Hammer & Sickle under Star)   1940r

1940 is the year of manufacture and 6866 is the serial number. The original transit case is in good shape with a functional latch.

Condition is excellent overall with very heavy wear from period service use. The paint shows very heavy wear with what looks to be red painted on much of the barrel. The mortar tube still attaches to the baseplate well, and the set displays very well!

The baseplate on its own measures 21 ½ x 23 ½”, and the mortar tube by itself measures 52 ½” long. When the entire set is together, we had it displaying at 48 ½” tall, but this obviously changes with adjustment.

An excellent example, the first example of this model we have ever offered. Don’s miss out! Ready to become the centerpiece of any WWII collection.

The M-37 or 82-BM-37 (батальонный миномёт, battalion mortar) is a Soviet 82 millimeter calibre mortar designed by B.I. Shavyrin and accepted into service in 1937. The design of the M-37 is based on the earlier French Brandt mle 27/31 mortar with Russian modifications. The main difference between the 82-PM-37 and the earlier 82-PM-36 was the adoption of a round base plate, revised traverse/elevation controls, simplified sights and spring-loaded shock absorbers on the bi-pod to reduce the amount of relaying needed between shots. It was designed to be able to fire western 81 mm captured ammunition whilst not permitting the enemy the same advantage The German designation for captured M-37 mortars was 8.2 cm GrW 274/2(r).

The BM-37 is a rugged and easy to use weapon system. It is able to fire 15 to 25 round per minute out to a range of 3 km. Judged by today's standards the M37 is fairly heavy and has a limited range. Modern designs in the same caliber are lighter, provide better accuracy and offer ranges of over 5 km. For most purposes the BM-37 will still do well and the significant numbers that are still in service remain a potent weapon system.

Soviet forces used large number of 82mm mortars during World War 2. Captured mortars were used by Finnish and German troops. The BM-37 and its derivatives were exported to most Soviet allies. The production continued well into the Cold War era until it was replaced in production by the improved 2B14 Podnos 82mm mortar. Large numbers were produced in China as the Type 53. In Eastern European service it is mostly replaced by the newer 2B14 Podnos, but many remain in service around the world.
