Original Item: Only One Set Available. This is a very interesting Soviet mortar ammunition display set consisting of an original wooden transport crate, one complete inert 82mm mortar round with fuze and tail assembly, one partial inert 60mm mortar round, and an additional damaged fuze stored in a cylindrical holder attached inside the crate.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in a BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

The Soviet Union employed a wide variety of mortars during WWII, ranging from light 50mm company-level weapons to the widely used 82mm battalion mortars and much larger 120mm systems. Soviet 82mm designs included the M1936, M1937, and later M1941 patterns, all part of the development of the Red Army’s highly effective infantry mortar system.

The largest item in this set is a complete inert 82mm mortar round, retaining its fuze, body, and tail assembly. The body is marked:

The round retains a substantial amount of its original paint and displays good honest service wear. It measures approximately 12 1/4 inches long.

Also included is a partial 60mm mortar round consisting of the body with a transit plug installed in the fuze opening. The original fuze and tail assembly are no longer present. No visible markings were located on this round. It measures approximately 8 1/4 inches long.

Mounted inside the crate is a small cylindrical storage tube containing an additional fuze. This fuze is marked:

M-5 255 18-A

It is in poor condition, with substantial damage and deterioration, and is beginning to come apart.

The wooden ammunition crate itself shows extensive military use and storage wear. The exterior is heavily scuffed and worn, with considerable surface wear throughout, but it remains an appealing display piece.

Both sides retain stenciled markings that appear to read:

The precise meaning of all of these markings has not been determined. Of particular interest is the 8/51 marking. If this represents an August 1951 date, the crate would be post-WWII rather than wartime manufacture. The other numbers on the crate likewise warrant additional research before assigning a firm production date.

The combination of the wooden transport box, two different inert mortar rounds, and additional fuze makes this a visually impressive Soviet ordnance grouping and an excellent illustration of the types of indirect-fire ammunition used by Soviet forces during and immediately after WWII.

Condition varies throughout the set. The 82mm round remains the strongest component, retaining original finish and complete external configuration. The 60mm round is incomplete, lacking its tail and fuze, while the separate fuze is heavily deteriorated. The crate itself is rough and heavily service worn but remains structurally presentable.

Totally inert, cannot be converted to an explosive device, not available for export. This item is completely legal within the USA.
