Original Item: Only One Available. This is an interesting Soviet RGD-5 pattern training or instructional hand grenade, retaining a substantial amount of its original green painted finish and fitted with a distinctive long-lever practice-type fuze assembly. The familiar smooth, rounded body and pronounced circumferential ridge closely follow the form of the Soviet RGD-5 offensive fragmentation grenade, one of the most widely encountered hand grenade designs of the Cold War period.
The RGD-5 was developed in the Soviet Union during the early 1950s and officially adopted by the Soviet Army in 1954 as a replacement for the earlier RG-42. Its compact, smooth-sided body differed considerably from the externally segmented defensive F-1 grenade. The RGD-5 design was subsequently supplied to and manufactured by a number of Soviet-aligned nations, making the general pattern familiar throughout the Warsaw Pact and beyond.
This particular example appears to have been intended for training. It is fitted with a long dark-colored release lever and retains its safety pin and pull ring. The exact model and national origin of the fuze have not yet been confirmed.
The grenade body is finished in green, with extensive honest wear from handling and use. Much of the finish has worn away across the raised surfaces, exposing the bright metal underneath, while protected areas retain considerably more of the original green paint. The raised center ridge remains well defined, and the overall shape is recognizable as belonging to the RGD-5 family. The Soviet URG-N was the purpose-built reusable training counterpart to the RGD-5 and employed a modified training fuze. Standard Soviet URG-N examples, however, were normally distinguished by black paint and training markings.
