Original Item. Only One Available. This is a great example of an extremely scarce WWII Slovakian Hlinka Guard Dagger, with a lovely nickel plated finish on the brass fittings. These are found in gilt brass and nickel plated, the latter being slightly harder to find. The Hlinka Guard has often been called the “Slovak SS” due to having been trained by the German SS to provide internal military police duties in Slovakia. This was a very small group, roughly 3500 men, making this a scarce example.
This example is in overall very good condition, with a lovely carbon steel blade featuring a wide central fuller running the majority of the length of each side of the blade. These are mainly intended for dress purposes, so the blade is not sharpened, though it does show marks from the original grinding and polishing. There is also a bit of light oxidation present. The number “76” is stamped onto the obverse ricasso.
The blade sits securely within a multi-piece hilt with a nickel plated bronze crossguard, the obverse of which is stamped with initials “HG” (“Hlinkova garda / Hlinka Guard). The handle is composed of a single piece of lacquered dark brown wood. It completes with a nickel plated bronze pommel which takes the form of a minimalist art deco eagle’s head with a hooked beak which, in combination with the curved handle and hooked crossguard, provides a secure and comfortable grip. There is some loss of the plating on the eagle-head but nothing serious.
The dagger is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal body. The chape and locket are both nickel plated bronze, and the former has a nice carrying loop attached for the accommodation of a hanger.
This is an unbelievably scarce dagger, ready for further research and display. This is only the second example we have ever had to offer, so don’t miss it.
