  • Original Item: Only One Available.  The Pattern 1853 Percussion ENFIELD rifle was the finest rifle of its day. It ended up all over the World. All over the British Empire and greatly imported into North America for use on both sides in the U.S. War between the States. Massive quantities were shipped into India, and it was due to the paper cartridges that were supplied with the muzzle loaders that triggered the 1857 Indian Mutiny or Sepoy Rebellion.

Due to the ubiquitous nature of the gun in the empire, it was no surprise that locally made and contract variants appeared. This is one such example, with a clear marking on the lock pate indicating issue in one of the "Princely States" that followed the decline of the Sikh Empire and ensuing Anglo-Sikh Wars. The design closely follows the British P-1853 Enfield Rifle, though it is a Two Band variety, and slightly shorter at 52 inches in overall length. It has a bayonet stand on the right side of the barrel, most likely for some type of saber bayonet, so this would probably be some type of Artillery Short rifle.

It has a rear sight, though it is either missing the slider, or made more for display, as we cannot see any way to adjust it for range. We checked the barrel, and it does have clear 4 groove rifling, which is still in very good condition, with little oxidation. The lock is still functional, though will not hold at half cock. It still has the original sling swivels, and is fitted with a recent issue leather sling of simple design.

Condition is very good, with a great patina of age. It is missing the retaining spring for the nose cap, and the ramrod looks to be one for a carbine, which is now stuck in the channel.

A great chance to pick up a very interesting locally made Enfield type rifle, ready to display and research!
