This is a signed print of “The Filthy Thirteen” by Joel Iskowitz, signed at the bottom by four of its members Including Jake McNiece, Jack Agnew, Jack Womer, and Robert Cone. The frame is well-put together and the print is very clear. This is a limited run print, and appears to be an Main Edition example, number 50/950.

“- 5 June 1944, Exeter Field, England -

With shaved Mohawks and donned war paint from the wet invasion stripes of their waiting C-47, the Demolition Saboteur Platoon, HQ Company, 506th PIR, make preparations for their pre-dawn parachute jump into Normandy. Known as the ‘Filthy Thirteen’, these rebellious and hard fighting men became legendary during the Normandy Invasions.

The frame comes with the original certificate of authenticity, matched to the number of the print, and a small sheet naming all 13 members with their status. Lastly is a great photo of all four signers of this print together.

The four signatures are especially desirable because each man had a genuine connection with the Filthy Thirteen and its wartime history.

Jake McNiece became the best-known member and unofficial leader of the group.

Jack Agnew was an original member of the demolition section, took part in the Normandy mission, later participated in Operation Market Garden, and subsequently volunteered with McNiece for the Pathfinder mission into besieged Bastogne.

Jack Womer served with the demolition section and also jumped into Normandy. He later remained with the unit through subsequent combat operations.

Robert S. “Ragsman” Cone was also a member of the Filthy Thirteen and participated in the Normandy operation. Period and later veteran accounts record that he was captured during the Normandy campaign. Stars and Stripes photographed Cone together with Womer during a 2008 Filthy Thirteen veterans gathering.

Rather than simply commemorating a famous airborne unit in retrospect, this print was issued while all four signatories were still alive and able to participate directly in the project. The Army’s contemporary coverage of the 2009 unveiling confirms that McNiece, Agnew, Womer, and Cone were the four surviving veterans specifically honored by the artwork.
