Original Item. Only One Available. This is a signed print of “Off the Beach! With the Old Breed on Peleliu” by Matt Hall, signed at the bottom by Marines Dan Lawler & Jim Young, with four additional signatures having been added to the frame later. The frame is very crude, with plexiglass instead of glass and tape holding the frame together at the back. There is no hanging wire, but two velcro strips which will require command strips to properly hang. This is a limited run print of the Victory Edition, numbered 125 out of 500. The print comes with its original Certificate of Authenticity which is correctly numbered to the print.
It is 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 15, 1944, as the Marines of K-Company churn onto Peleliu. Vehicle exhaust, gun smoke, and burning vegetation choke the air as Japanese artillery and mortars pound the pre-sighted beaches. Machine gun bullets rip across the sand as Eugene Sledge, in his baptism of fire, trails veteran R.V. Burgin.
Sent to capture Peleliu’s airfield from an enemy of unknown strength, the men of K-3-5 and their brothers of the 1st Marine Division know they are in the fight of their lives. But, for now, only one thought echoes through their minds: Get off the beach!
The two men who signed the print are:
- Jim Young was a member of H-2-1, the same Company as Robert Leckie, and he fought with Leckie for the same Peleliu airfield as the men of K-3-5.
- Dan Lawler famously served with the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa and saw more combat in those two campaigns than any man would ever wish to endure. But endure he did.
The four additional signatures include:
- Robert Leckie was a United States Marine and an author of books about the military history of the United States, Catholic history and culture, sports books, fiction books, autobiographies, and children's books. As a young man, he served with the 1st Marine Division during World War II; his service as a machine gunner and a scout during the war greatly influenced his work.
- Eugene Sledge was a United States Marine, university professor, and author. His 1981 memoir With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa chronicled his combat experiences during World War II and was used as source material for the Ken Burns PBS documentary The War (2007), as well as the HBO miniseries The Pacific (2010), in which he is portrayed by Joseph Mazzello.
- R.V. Burgin is on the K-Company "Roll of Honor" as 1 of only 26 Peleliu veterans of K-3-5 still standing by the end of the Okinawa Campaign.
- Sidney Phillips was a United States Marine, family practice physician, and author from Mobile, Alabama. He provided source material and interviews for the making of Ken Burns' PBS documentary film The War and the HBO miniseries The Pacific. His recollections revolve around his time as a young man fighting in the Pacific War.
A great framed print with its certificate of authenticity, ready for display.
