  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very attractive framed print of James Dietz’s “Guns from Heaven” signed by the artist and individually numbered 248 of 518. Airborne Gunners arrive by glider on the 17th & 18th of September, 1944. The print depicts the actions of the 319th and 320th Glider Field Artillery Battalions, and the 376th and 456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalions at LZs “N” and “T” in Holland. According to the historical data available, gliders with the men from these battalions delivered 51 howitzers, 117 jeeps, and 106 trailers despite the intense barrage of German artillery fire, flak, and small arms fire over the LZs. While the landings were taking place, the Luftwaffe also managed to strafe the LZs. The 376th FA, which landed by parachute assault, provided counterbattery fires against German positions.

The top of the print shows the battle streamer for Nijmegen 1944.

The glider landings took place under German artillery, antiaircraft, and small arms fire, while Luftwaffe aircraft also strafed portions of the landing areas. Getting complete artillery pieces, vehicles, ammunition, crews, and supporting equipment onto the ground under these conditions was essential if the lightly equipped airborne infantry was to have meaningful fire support after landing.

The 319th and 320th Glider Field Artillery Battalions brought their artillery into Holland principally by glider. Airborne 75mm pack howitzers were particularly well suited to this role because they could be transported with their crews and supporting vehicles by aircraft and glider, providing the airborne division with relatively mobile artillery support immediately after landing.

The 376th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, by contrast, entered the operation by parachute assault. Dietz's historical description specifically records the battalion providing counterbattery fire against German positions, adding another dimension to the artillery activity represented in the composition.

The fourth unit depicted, the 456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, likewise formed part of the artillery strength committed with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Holland operation. Bringing together both parachute and glider artillery formations allowed the division to establish a comparatively substantial supporting fire capability despite operating far beyond the immediate reach of conventional ground artillery during the early stages of Market Garden.

James Dietz is known for highly detailed military paintings that combine individual soldiers, equipment, terrain, and unit history within carefully researched narrative scenes. His work has been widely commissioned by military organizations, veterans’ associations, and individual units.

The print is well-framed and measures 30¼ x 38¼”, and is in great shape with a retained hanging wire. The frame covers most of the area underneath the print, and the only visible signature is that of the artist, James Dietz.

With its James Dietz signature, individual 248/518 edition number, substantial 30¼ x 38¼” framed presentation, detailed depiction of the 319th, 320th, 376th, and 456th Field Artillery Battalions, and direct connection to the 82nd Airborne Division's Operation Market Garden history, this is a particularly attractive piece of modern military artwork. It would display especially well in a collection devoted to the 82nd Airborne Division, airborne artillery, glider operations, Operation Market Garden, Nijmegen, or signed military prints commemorating WWII combat.
