Item Description
Original Item: Only One Set Available. Several years ago IMA acquired a large bayonet collection from a very enthusiastic European collector. Some of these we have decided to sell in small groups, giving starting collectors a great chance to pick up a few bayonets to get started with collecting.
Here we have two very typical bayonets as they were often designed around the turn of the 20th century. At the time bayonets were mounted to long rifles, and needed to be long enough to attack mounted opponents. However, the days of mounted Cavalry were already drawing to a close, so bayonets were made to also be used as hand held weapons.
The first in this set is a very nice bayonet for the Belgian M1889 rifle, produced in the U.S. by HOPKINS AND ALLEN ARMS CO, NORWICH CONN. It is fairly standard, with a hooked quillon and muzzle ring, standard mortise type attachment, and wooden grips. It comes with a steel scabbard with an integral leather frog, though unfortunately the throat of the scabbard is missing.
The second bayonet is a WWII production (dated '42) Australian (marked MA) made British P-1907 long bayonet, as used on the British SMLE No.1 MkIII rifle. It has been set up as a parade bayonet, with nickel or possibly chrome plating on the bayonet, and grips painted white. The scabbard also has had the lower portion painted white.
A nice set of bayonets, complete with scabbards and ready to add to your collection!
