Original Item: Only One Set Available. Several years ago IMA acquired a large bayonet collection from a very enthusiastic European collector. Some of these we have decided to sell in small groups, giving starting collectors a great chance to pick up a few bayonets to get started with collecting.
Here we have two turn of the 20th century European bayonets, which are quite a bit different in style and quality of manufacture.
The first is an Austrian-made bayonet made to fit the Austro-Hungarian Empire's Mannlicher M1895 straight pull bolt action Rifle, which was the principal Rifle of the first World War for the Austrian Empire. It is a rather standard bayonet design, however this particular example has a front sight fitted on top of the bayonet crossguard. This is a very rare version used with the Mannlicher M1895 Cavalry Carbine.
Condition is very good, with the blade looking nearly unissued. The rest of the bayonet and scabbard have the usual wear from long service
The second bayonet is a standard German WWI "Ersatz" bayonet, as described in the classic work by J.ANTHONY CARTER, GERMAN BAYONETS, VOLUME THREE published in 1992. This is the complete work covering all types of WWI Ersatz bayonets and cherished by bayonet collectors everywhere. This example is a type EB10, which originally would have had a 12 inch blade.
As with many Ersatz bayonets, this example was then officially shortened to 10 inches and shipped to WWI Ally Turkey. There, either during or after the conflict, it was further shortened to 8 inches, and given a profile much more like a fighting knife than a bayonet. Condition is good, but does snow much wear.
