Original Item: Only One Set of Three Available. In 1935 the German military introduced the K98k bolt action rifle or Karabiner 98 Kurz, as a replacement for the older GEW98 or Gewehr 98. A new, shorter bayonet was designed to go along with the shortened rifle. The K98 bayonet was officially named Seitengewehr 84/98 III or SG 84/98 III, and was a slightly updated of the SG 84/98 II used during WWI. The bayonet was designed as a close combat sidearm that could be placed on the tip of a K98.
The total length of the K98 bayonet was 15.2 inches, far shorter than the 20 inch long GEW98 bayonet. The blade was also straighter in shape and the hand guard was omitted. The K98 bayonet was carried in a leather frog, or Seitengewehrtragetasche, on the left side on the equipment belt in combination with the shovel and its carrier. The maker marks on k98 bayonets where stamped onto the top of the blade. On the reverse the batch number and suffix were stamped.
This is a very nice set of three bayonets with scabbards for the K98k rifle, one of which is a long nickel plated "parade" version. They make a nice set, representing a pre-war bayonet, a wartime dress bayonet, and a mid war bayonet.
The earliest bayonet in the set is an interwar example of an S84/98 III, maker marked E.u.F. HÖRSTER, for the well-known maker E. & F. Hörster & Co Gmbh of Solingen, Germany. It is dated 37 on the spine for 1937, with balekite grip scales, and a functional bayonet latch. It comes with an unmarked steel scabbard in a very nice leather bayonet frog.
The second bayonet in the set is a nickel-plated firemans "dress" example, marked CARL HENKEL BIELEFELD. It is a typical fireman's style dress bayonet, with an "S" shaped crossguard, and checkered bakelite grips. It has no bayonet catch at all, and comes in an unmarked steel scabbard. The remains of a troddel knot strap are still attached to the handle.
The last bayonet is a wartime example, marked 41 on the spine for 1941 manufacture. It has a serial number on the ricasso, but there is just an "i" or "j" on the other side, which is definitely interesting. It has very nice bakelite grips and a functional bayonet latch. It comes with an unmarked steel scabbard in a very nice leather bayonet frog.
A great set of German bayonets for the 98K rifle, ready to add to your collection!
