Original Item: Only One Set of Three Available. In 1935 the German military introduced the K98k bolt action rifle or Karabiner 98 Kurz, as a replacement for the older GEW98 or Gewehr 98. A new, shorter bayonet was designed to go along with the shortened rifle. The K98 bayonet was officially named Seitengewehr 84/98 III or SG 84/98 III, and was a slightly updated of the SG 84/98 II used during WWI. The bayonet was designed as a close combat sidearm that could be placed on the tip of a K98.
The total length of the K98 bayonet was 15.2 inches, far shorter than the 20 inch long GEW98 bayonet. The blade was also straighter in shape and the hand guard was omitted. The K98 bayonet was carried in a leather frog, or Seitengewehrtragetasche, on the left side on the equipment belt in combination with the shovel and its carrier. The maker marks on k98 bayonets where stamped onto the top of the blade. On the reverse the batch number and suffix were stamped.
This is a very nice set of three bayonets with scabbards for the K98k rifle, one of which is a long nickel plated "parade" version. They make a nice set, representing a pre-war bayonet, a wartime dress bayonet, and a later war bayonet.
The earliest bayonet in the set is an interwar example of an S84/98 III, maker marked S/244, the interwar maker code for Mundlos AG in Magdeburg-Nord. It is dated 36 on the spine for 1936, with wooden grip scales, and a functional bayonet latch. It comes with a steel scabbard by the same maker, but with a different serial number.
The second bayonet in the set is a nickel-plated "dress" example, marked by maker A. EVERTZ. SOLINGEN on the ricasso. It is a typical Wehrmacht style dress bayonet, with a WWI style crossguard, and checkered bakelite grips. It has a functional bayonet latch and comes in an unmarked steel scabbard with leather frog.
The last bayonet is a later wartime example, marked 43 fze on the ricasso for 1943 manufacture by F. W. Höller of Solingen, Germany. The bayonet handle definitely has rust and weather, but still has intact bakelite grip scales, and a functional bayonet latch. It comes with a steel scabbard by BERG & Co. dated 1937, which is in great shape.
A great set of German bayonets for the 98K rifle, ready to add to your collection!
