Original Set of Two Italian WWI M1870/87/15 Vetterli Rifle Cut-down Bayonets with Scabbards

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Set of Two Available. Here we have a set of two cut-down bayonets for use with the WWI Italian Vetterli M1870/87/15 rifle, in 6.5mm Carcano caliber. Both have had the hooked quillon removed and the blade reduced in length from the original 20 1/4" to approximately 9 1/2", to give about the same reach as an M1891 Carcano rifle. This also made the bayonet much more useful as a hand held weapon. Both come complete with their shortened brass fitted leather scabbards.

One of these started life as a very early pattern pattern bayonet, with a long spring for the bayonet catch, while the other is a later pattern with a shorter spring and without the extended fitting on the pommel for the tang. The bayonet with the long spring has had the original composition grip scales replaced with wood, while the short spring bayonet still retains them. Both have the cut out lower muzzle ring that was introduced in 1875, as indicated by Anthony Carter in his work World Bayonets 1800 to the Present.

Both bayonets are in good service used condition, and would be the perfect addition to any WWI Modified Italian Vetterli Rifle.

Dimensions for Both:
Blade length: 9 1/2”
Blade Style: Single Edged with Fuller
Overall length: 14”
Crossguard: 3 1/4”

Scabbard length: 10 1/2"
