Original Item: One of a Kind. This is just lovely, a well carved wood Ram's Horn Snuff Mull with sterling silver hinged lid engraved Cap’t Alex’r Fraser 71st Reg’t, with the initials A.F. engraved on the top. Measures approximately 2 1/2” x 2 5/8” x 1 1/2”, and is in really great shape. The lid still closes securely, and has a lovely worn look. The lid is decorated with silver and what appears to be a very small gemstone which is missing some pieces.
The 71st Regiment of Foot was a Highland regiment in the British Army, raised as the 73rd (Highland) Regiment of Foot in 1777. Under the Childers Reforms it amalgamated with the 74th (Highland) Regiment of Foot to become the 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry in 1881.The regiment was raised at Elgin by Major-General John Mackenzie, Lord MacLeod as the 73rd (Highland) Regiment of Foot (McLeod's Highlanders) from Highland clans in December 1777. A second battalion was formed in September 1778.
The 71st participated in the Peninsula War, the Battle of Waterloo as part of the 3rd Brigade, and in the Crimean War at Sevastopol.
A very fine Snuff Mull named to an Officer on whom no research has yet been made that we can find. He most likely served with the regiment in the very early 19th century. We have found a few newspaper articles from this period mentioning a Captain Alexander Fraser, but we have found no concrete information about them being in the 71st.
