Item Description
Original Items: One of a Kind Set. This is a very interesting Scottish lovely All Steel "boxlock" style flintlock pocket pistol, dating to approximately 1820. The grip is hollow and made from sheet steel, something we rarely see on European arms, and features engraving throughout the frame, though it is worn. The grip shows some lovely floral engraving, but more importantly, there are engraved thistle flowers on either side of the "box lock", an almost certain attribution to Scotland, where the plant is the national symbol. It is also closely linked to the motto of Scotland: "Nemo me impune lacessit", which is Latin for "No one provokes me with impunity", definitely true of a thistle.
The weapon measures 8 1/8" in overall length with a screw off 3 1/8" rifled .42"cal iron cannon barrel, which in very good condition, showing signs of light to moderate use. Like most we see, the barrel joint is unfortunately seized, and probably has been for well over 100 years. We unfortunately cannot make out any proofs or other markings on the pistol due to the light overall oxidation and cleaning that have occurred in the past.
The pistol now shows an overall bright polished finish, with evidence of past removed oxidation. There is still staining in areas, and it overall has a lovely patina of age. The engraving is somewhat faded, but still easily visible in the light, and this must have been quite a showpiece when it was originally made. The pistol does look to have seen a good amount of use, and while the lock is functional, it does not hold at half cock anymore. We can see a hole in the bottom of the frizzen, which would usually go to some type of locking pin to hold it closed, however there is no pin to interface with it. There is a hole on the rear of the pan, so maybe it originally had some type of pin that would present at half cock, now lost. We checked the bore, and we can see rifling, however there is also past oxidation and fouling.
To make this offering even better, it came to us with a fantastic custom wood case, which measures approximately 9 3/8" x 5 3/8" x 2 3/16", and has different compartments inside, all burgundy velvet lined. These are for various accessories one might use with the pistol, and in the case is a very nice steel bullet mold for round bullets, a small brass powder flask, and POWDER SHOT measure with a wooden handle. There is also a compartment with two round bullets in it, and some that are unused. The case is lovely, and there is still a lock at the front, however there is no key, and we do not know if the lock is functional.
A very interesting All Steel Scottish Flintlock pistol, complete with a custom wood case and some great accessories. Ready to research and display!
