  • Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice Scottish percussion single barrel fowling piece, and it definitely is quite a looker! It features a lovely spiral forged barrel, which is octagonal at the breech, and then has additional bevels to give it 16 sides, before transitioning to a round barrel. A most attractive design.

It is half-stoked and has mostly steel mounts of butt plate, trigger guard, escutcheons, and ram rod pipes, while the nose cap is nickel silver. The walnut stock is checkered at the grip. This is definitely an upmarket bespoke piece, and it features lovely engravings on on all fittings, especially the lock, which has scroll engraving, as well as a hunting scene showing a hunting dog chasing a game bird. At the top of the lock it is marked by maker JOHN PRATT. This gunmaker was located at 99 Princes St in Edinburgh, and lived until 1860. His son, also named John, worked for him and may have taken over the shop by that point.

The top barrel facet has the full name and address of the maker:

    J. PRATT 99 PRINCES STREET EDINBURGH

This gun really is an attractive piece, with lots of ornamentation. The lock functions correctly, holding at half-cock, and firing at full. It still has an original wooden ramrod with a brass tip under the barrel. The stock is also very attractive, though unfortunately it has a repaired crack through the wrist, a very common area for breaks due to the wood removed for the lock and trigger guard.

A lovely Scottish Fowling piece, very attractive and ready to display!
