Long before becoming famous as the author of The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax, Dr Seuss used his talents to produce political cartoons and propaganda during the Second World War.

Though he's known almost exclusively for his famous series of children's books, Theodor Geisel, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss, had a varied career long before his literary fame. He started out the same way as many other famous American artists, like Norman Rockwell, by becoming an ad illustrator and comic creator for such entities as Vanity Fair, Life, The Saturday Evening Post, NBC, General Electric, and Standard Oil. But, it was when America joined its European Allies in WWII that he discovered a newfound passion, if not obsession.

Theodor Seuss Geisel wrote and illustrated more than 60 children’s books under the pen name Dr Seuss, but the American Government also used his artistic abilities to fight fascism and aid the Allied war effort. With four of his classic books already under his belt, Geisel shifted away from his burgeoning career in children's literature to singlemindedly focus on political cartoons.

Geisel, the grandson of German immigrants, had been working in advertising and had already published his first children’s book, And to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street, when war broke out. An outspoken critic of isolationism who drew hundreds of political cartoons denouncing Mussolini for the New York daily newspaper PM. Poignant, critical, and scathing in his pro-war pieces, the fervent Geisel churned out over 400 of these cartoons in just two short years. He gained the notice of U.S. government, who hired him to create propaganda for the Treasury Department and the War Production Board, where he drew up this unique poster with a good dose of his trademark whimsy. Geisel joined the US Army and was deployed to Fox studios in Hollywood to work with some of the country’s top filmmakers and animators as part of Oscar-winning director Frank Capra’s signal corps unit.

History buffs should be overjoyed at the opportunity to obtain such an incredible piece as this.
