Original Rare WWII Mongolian Officer's Short Sword with Scabbard
Original Item: Only One Available. Outer Mongolia — officially the Mongolian People's Republic — was ruled (1930s to 1952) by the communist government of Khorloogiin Choibalsan during the period of World War II and had close links with the Soviet Union. Most countries regarded Mongolia, with its fewer than a million inhabitants, as a breakaway province of the Republic of China. Throughout the 1941–1945 war between Germany and the Soviet Union, Mongolia provided the Soviets with economic support—such as livestock, raw materials, money, food and military clothing—violating Mongolian neutrality in favor of the Allies. Mongolia was one of two Soviet satellite states not generally recognized as sovereign states at the time, along with the Tuvan People's Republic; both of these republics participated in World War II.
This is a rare Mongolian Army officer's Short Sword, complete with its brass mounted steel scabbard. The design is similar to the military daggers used in other parts of Asia, such as China and Japan, and was almost certainly influenced by these designs. It has a somewhat crudely made plated blade, which is similar in shape to a standard bayonet blade. The hilt is brass with embossed with stalks of grain, probably wheat or rice. It has a leather grip, which originally had wire wrapping, now missing.
The scabbard is steel, finished in black with brass fittings matching the design motifs on the hilt. It has two hanger rings, which are in good condition. The short sword fits in the scabbard, though it does not go in all the way, as there seems to be some damage to the scabbard near the drag. This also means that we cannot get the scabbard to lock onto the hilt.
A nice service used example of a hard to find WWII era short sword, ready to display!
