Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very interesting World War I recruitment poster, printed circa 1917 in the United States by THE CROWN PRESS, CHICAGO, as indicated in the lower left corner. It is matted and framed, and measures approximately 28" x 41". There is an example of this same poster currently held in the collection of the Imperial War Museum, as well as an example in the Auckland Museum in Australia, with the comment "poster produced during the First World War, in an attempt at recruiting ‘Britons and Canadians’ living in the United States." The center of a poster shows the British Union Jack over British soldiers in "Brodie Helmets", with the following text:
BRITONS
and
CANADIANS
FIGHT UNDER YOUR OWN FLAG
IN THE ALLIED ARMIES
ALONGSIDE THE STARS AND STRIPES
ENLIST TODAY!
Once the U.S. entered the war on the side of the Allies, there was now the opportunity to also recruit British and Canadian citizens in the United States, who previously would have had to possibly arrange their own passage to Europe in order to take part. Now they would be able to enlist in the United States and be transported to the front in large protected convoys.
Condition of the poster is good, though it is definitely in somewhat delicate condition, and we do not recommend removing it from the frame, unless it is to be promptly re-framed. We can see tears and other age-related deterioration on the poster, though the colors are still quite vibrant.
A very interesting WWI recruitment poster, ready to add to your collection!
