Original Item: Only One Available. Incredibly rare original wooden ammunition crate dating from the early days of the Indian Wars, and early on in the days of the U.S. Army using the model 1871 and 1873 Colt revolvers!
This is a Frankford Arsenal crate which is a rarity, as the crates were not deemed expendable items, and were intended to be returned in order to have them refilled and repacked at a later date. Most likely, this is a Civil War Era crate which was reused several times. There are even records indicating soldiers who received disciplinary actions against them for destroying these crates! Due to the nature of this, finding a crate this early is an incredibly rare find today! Most were reused for years following manufacture!
Crate is beautifully marked on each end:
CARTRIDGES
FOR COLT’S
REVOLVER
CAL.45
The left side of the Crate is marked:
FROM
FRANKFORD
ARSENAL, Pa.
The right side of the Crate is marked:
Manufactured
AUG. 17 1874
The crate still exhibits the original ordnance green paint, which has developed a pleasing patina over the last 130+ years. The bottom of the crate still has the two Frankford Arsenal Wax Seals on the bottom, which are miraculously intact after all these years. The wooden crate measures approximately 17" x 10 5/8" x 6 1/2" and weighs about 6 lbs.
This is a rare opportunity to obtain a hard to find piece of Western Frontier Indian War history! This would be ideal for a military or Colt collector alike!
