Original item: One Only. This is an Exceptionally RARE Prussian Bayonet, made to fit the Dornbuchse M1849 rifles used by Prussian-supplied Schelswig-Holstein forces, who were rebelling against the Danish Govt. in 1849–1851. This region had a land border with the German states, and while the Northern was mostly Danish, the Southern portion was mostly German, resulting in several rebellions and conflicts. The rifles and bayonets were taken into Danish service after the first conflict and reissued as the Suhler Tapriffel Model 1854.
According to Per Holmback, noted authority on Scandinavian bayonets, approximately 12,000 of these weapons were taken over by the Danish Army after 1851 (from the Schleswig-Holstein rebels) and converted in 1854.
The unique locking spring catch was designed by Johan Christian Wilken Kyhl (pronounced, 'cool') and first introduced in 1794. The Kyhl spring catch was used on Danish bayonets from 1794–1860 and also on bayonets made by Norwegian and Prussian makers. For more information please see Watts & White's fine work THE BAYONET BOOK, Page 67, Item 148.
The socket of the bayonet still has the original German markings, as well as those added by Denmark.
1854 _ 299
S.H. III. I.C.C. 131.
The top line was was added by Denmark after these were captured, while the line below it is the original Schelswig-Holstein regiment marking.
This is a truly great collector's opportunity to purchase a very good condition rare bayonet with a solid historical connection. Ready to add to your collection!
